A look into the east

Among the many trends presented on the runways for 2020 there is one turning our eyes to the East, poised between China and Japan, that conquers the prêt- à-porter and Haute Couture collections in a balance of shapes and proportions.

The style of the Celestial Empire is simple and linear: unstructured jackets, blouses, and straight-cut dresses, often sewn with standing collars reminiscent of the qipao(or cheongsam in Cantonese), the traditional Chinese women’s dress, a symbol of elegance, beauty, and sensuality. Deep slits and silks with floral patterns that bring brightness to the garments, as well as brocades and damasks woven with golden threads.

Tassels, obi belts, sakura patterns (cherry blossoms) or designs with graphic lines for a fashion trend that embraces the philosophy of the Rising Sun.

Yukata dressing gowns, kimono dresses or fabric mixes inspired by origami, branches, lotus flowers, and Ukiyo-e effect prints. Jacquards showing mythological scenes from Imperial Asia and even Lolita-style accents so loved by Harajuku Girls (in this case, the Sweet Lolita characterised by soft colours and childlike appearance).

This is a fashion trend with fascinating implications and traces that come from a cultured and traditional past world, now reinterpreted in a contemporary style.
